"Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand"
Stevie Wonder
Vuja de is a band located in the suburbs of Philadelphia, but ready to travel where the music takes us. To date, we perform cover songs. Not the cover tunes you'll hear from other bands. Not the songs you'll hear on current commercial radio stations. We mean classically good rock, blues and jam songs from A to Z. Aretha Franklin to Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin to Stevie Wonder, The Police to The Grateful Dead, Paul Simon, Edie Brickell, James Taylor, and that's just the beginning! The band was comprised of four musicians from varying backgrounds. Our first performance was in August of 1998. We are now four friends with the same desire: breathe life into music so that the people may dance and sing! Simply put, we live and love music!
The heart of the band is vocalist Kimberly Scheffey. The music hit her early on in life, thanks to a family diet of "breakfast with The Beatles" to dessert with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. She has been singing ever since in choirs, musicals and bands, with a brief study in music at West Chester University. The past six years she has fronted the Irish band Causeway. Vuja de enables her to share with people the spirit invoked in her through melody and rhythm. She brings all the energy and vocal strength she has to every gig and you can hear it in each song.
The bass guitar springs to life at the hands of Todd Scheffey. The common denominator who brought the band members together, he envisioned a band of kind people that played the music he enjoyed. His musical interests have enabled him to perform various styles in many bands. From covering The Grateful Dead and more to original projects,he has experience beyond his years. His most treasured talent in Vuja de is his ability to deliciously blend rhythm with melody; sound with feel.
Paul Javier has filled the shoes of lead guitarist. By no means an easy task, he does it with style, personality, and a keen sense of musicality. Originally from the Phillippines, Paul spent his childhood learning the craft of the guitar from his Father. He spent years playing on board cruise ships, primarily as a bass player, and docked himself in America to share his music with us. He has played in several bands here, of varying genres, one in which he performed with our drummer Joe. He came out to hear our band at the urgings of his old friend Joe, liked our repertoire, and decided he’d retire the bass guitar for a while to get back to the 6 string. We immediately hit it off musically and socially, became friends and band mates, and are out to make history.Holding down the groove is Joe Koons on drums. A student of the University of the Arts of Philadelphia, he knows how to create rhythm and he makes you feel the heart beat of each song. He has studied and performed with some of the greatest players in our area. His numerous bands have included funk, jazz, rock and pop and he brings all of this experience to our table.
For all people, music is a necessity. Some people listen. Some people dance. We create.
We look forward to making music for you.
